An innovative ‘on day service’ for patients contacting their GP practice that was launched in Long Eaton has now been expanded to cover several practices in Ilkeston.

In Long Eaton some patients who have called their GP for an appointment that day have been directed to the on day service where they see a GP or an advanced nurse practitioner as appropriate. This has increased same day access for patients and helped free up GP time to see patients with a long term condition or ongoing need.

And now following positive patient feedback and high rates of uptake of the service in Long Eaton, three GP practices in Ilkeston have joined the service.

The expansion of this service further across Erewash comes at a time when nationally NHS England is celebrating the second anniversary of its ‘vanguard’ sites. These sites include Wellbeing Erewash, a partnership between the people of Erewash, the local NHS, social care and the voluntary sector.

The on day service is just one of many projects set up by Wellbeing Erewash to improve the health and wellbeing of local people. The on day service is available from 8am to 6.30pm on weekdays excluding bank holidays. Patients just call their normal GP number.

Carol Foster, NHS Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) lead for the on day service, said: “We are delighted to be able to extend this service further across Erewash and plan to achieve additional coverage of local practices in the near future. It is helping improve access to primary care and providing GP practices with greater flexibility in how they support patients with more complex conditions.”
